Rack railway Schafbergbahn

Project description

The route of the Schafbergbahn will be renewed by the end of 2022.

The preliminary work for the route renovation already began in 2017 in order to renew the infrastructure and lay new tracks over the next five years. At the same time, necessary safety measures will be taken. The Schafbergbahn is a metre-gauge rack railway in Austria built around 120 years ago. It leads from St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee up to the Schafberg (1782 m). The drainage is mainly on the slope side via a trough with connected pipe crossings under the track onto the slope embankment on the valley side. In some sections there are cuttings in the natural rock. The space conditions on the route are very limited.
